Members
The Area Plan Commission is a 17 member body of elected officials (2/3) and citizens (1/3) representing all 6 member jurisdictions. In addition, the APC is the governor-designated Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) charged with transportation planning for our Metropolitan Statistical Area.
A 7-member Area Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) serves the community as the quasi-judicial body charged with hearing a variety of appeals that provide relief from specific terms of the zoning ordinance.
Primary Functions
The APC of Tippecanoe County is the multi-jurisdictional planning agency serving the Cities of Lafayette and West Lafayette, the Towns of Battle Ground, Clarks Hill and Dayton, and unincorporated Tippecanoe County. Created in 1959, its 3 primary functions are:
Comprehensive Planning (plans and policies to shape the future)
Current Planning (zoning and land division ordinances to implement the plans)
Transportation Planning (plans and strategies to serve all forms of future transportation needs)
Department Support
A planning department of professional and support staff assists the APC. Staff provides technical assistance to APC by reviewing zoning and development requests and providing written reports to the plan commission and the public. It also engages in all aspects of long-range comprehensive planning working with citizens and elected officials to shape the future of the community. Staff transportation planners model long-range transportation needs, developing solutions for congestion and safety for all modes of transportation from pedestrian to public transit.
The Area Plan Commission and its staff believe in providing quality service and the best products possible for the future of our community and enhanced quality of life.
